it is hard for me to explain the connection in my mind between cogs and clockwork and insects and arthropods. i suppose it is that they are simple and primitive on their own but come together to form more complex machines and societies. look at a bee hive or an ant hill. in my mind the cog is to big ben and an ant is to an ant colony. or something like that. i'll have to think if i can explain it better or see if any naturalists who wrote about insects summed it up more eloquently than i have. it is a metaphor i reached for visually -- going back a couple of years -- before i understood what it even meant.
